HKJC Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (ILCM) is going to launch a 2-day Debriefing Skills for Simulation Instructors course. The Debriefing Skill for Simulation Instructor (DSSI) Course aims to provide the essential knowledge and skills to develop learners’ competence in debriefing methods commonly used in simulation training courses.  The learners will have an understanding of the basic concepts of experiential and learner-centred education, and develop skills in a structured approach to debriefing.  On completion of the course, the learner will be able to facilitate a simulated scenario and apply adult learning methods in the teaching activity.   Curriculum development, scenario design and other technical aspects of simulation-based education will only be briefly covered to provide an understanding of simulation-based training.  This course is suitable for those who wish to learn more about simulation-based learning and to apply the techniques of debriefing and feedback as a tool in teaching adult learners.

The following strategies were considered in the development through this course:

1.         There will be pre-course short test for students before class session, while in-class time is devoted to interactive lectures, experiential experience, exercises and discussions. Set of post-course questions will be used to test understanding and knowledge at the end of the course.

2.         Whole-Part-Whole learning model is employed in the design of this course. The learner is exposed to a typical simulation-based immersive scenario followed by debriefing initially, followed by instructions and hands-on practice of the individual parts required for a simulation course.

3.         In this course the learner will be exposed to basic concept of team-based training and crew resource management elements during the learning activities.

4.         The learner is stimulated to adopt simulation-based learning as an effected method of learning and teaching, and be enthusiastic to apply this method.

Debriefing Skills for Simulation Instructors course will be held at ILCM on 14th – 15th April, 2018 (Saturday and Sunday). The primary audience are those who have wants to start simulation-based teaching.

The tuition fee is $10,000.  As an inaugural course, a 30% discount will be offered to applicants on a first-come-first serve basis. Interested applicants, please fill in the application form attached for enrolment, application closes on 23rd March, 2018 (Friday).
